Pearls Centre

About Pearls Centre

Pearls Centre was completed in 1977 and is a 22-storey building. Its intended use is for office rental, sale, and residential purposes.

Moreover, Pearl Centre has a few schools that are within a reasonable distance; the schools include AusEd-UniEd Singapore Pte. Ltd., Outram Secondary School, and Inspiration Design School.

Pearl Centre is not far away from Cold Storage Vivocity, Coleurs Pte Ltd, Outram Park Shopping Mall, and Teo Hong Road for various amenities including banks, retail shopping, and groceries. More so, eateries such as Morning Star Food Court and Kopitiam at the Singapore General Hospital and the Food Republic at VivoCity are a stone’s throw away.

There are several condos in the same vicinity as Pearl Centre. These condos are SOHO @ Central, The Clift, Riverwalk Apartments, Five On Shenton (V On Shenton), Highstreet Centre, and High Street Centre.

When it was still fully functional, Pearl Centre could boast of 44 residential units in its 12-storey apartment tower, about 199 shops in its 4-storey of the shopping centre. Pearl Centre was indeed a place to be because of a wide range of services available, which included travel agencies, coffee houses, beauty centres, traditional Chinese medicine stores, hairdressing salons, and many more.

Worthy of memory is one of Pearl Centre’s tenants, Yangtze Theatre (It was originally named Pearls Theatre.) named after the longest river in China and Asia. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the 1,159-seat capacity cinema occupied six stories inside Pearl Centre. It used to screen Hong Kong kungfu movies to cater to the need of Chinese residents that lived in Chinatown. Over the years, the ownership of the cinema changed, but the Cinema retained its name and business.

Sadly, however, Yangtze Theatre closed down with the activities of Pearl Centre. Singapore Land Authority acquired Pearl Centre in 2012 to construct new Thomson Line (TSL) and a mixed-use building that will be integrated with the current Outram MRT Station.
